They were primarily cattle herders and enjoyed privileges and higher status compared to the Hutu, who were farmers, and the Twa, who were hunter-gatherers. The Tutsi are an ethnic group with a long history in the Great Lakes region of East Africa, primarily in the countries of Rwanda, Burundi, and eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.
