This work symbolizes the precious hidden knowledge.
Immerse yourself in the fascinating world of these sacred masks from the Bandiagara Cliffs region in Mali.
Hidden within numerous caves, these masks were reserved for initiates and forbidden to the layman. The imposing and majestic Sigire masks could reach heights of up to 3 meters, making them the most impressive in all of West Africa. As for the Kanaga masks, iconic to the Dogon tradition, their shape recalls the famous Cross of Lorraine, making them easily recognizable. They held great symbolic importance, representing Man and his connection between Heaven and Earth.
The Dogon religion is based on animistic and cosmogonic beliefs. They worship a supreme god called Amma, as well as other deities associated with natural elements such as the sun, the moon, and water. These masks were worn during the solemn Dama ceremony, marking the end of a period of mourning and symbolizing rebirth.
